LAND PROTECTION PROGRAM: WILD LANDS, WILD WATERS

Appalachian Mountain Club, ME – For support of the Katahdin Iron Works project in northern Maine, specifically the purchase of the 37,000-acre Katahdin Iron Works property and the creation within it of a 10,386-acre Ecological Reserve, permanently protected by a forever wild easement to the State of Maine. Grant directed to the Northeast Land Trust Coalition, Pew Charitable Trusts, to generate matching funds.
$350,000 as part of a multi-year pledge

Aquidneck Land Trust, RI – For support of the acquisition of a forever wild easement on the 404-acre Water Reservoir Conservation Area, part of the Campaign for Living Land Project.
$20,000

Greater Lovell Land Trust, ME – For support of conservation planning in the Kezar Lake, Cold River and Kezar River watersheds, including a 25,000-acre unfragmented forest block.
$5,000

The Nature Conservancy of Maine – For support of the Debsconeags Lakes Wilderness Area, a 41,000-acre Nature Conservancy preserve, with a forever wild easement held by the Forest Soceity of Maine. Part of an initiative by multiple conservation groups striving to connect nearly 750,000 acres of contiguous protected land around Baxter State Park. Grant directed to the Great Bear Project in British Columbia, generating matching monies through the Wilson challenge fund.
$500,000 as final installment of a multi-year pledge

The Nature Conservancy of New Hampshire – For support of the acquisition and stewardship of the 635-acre Murray Tract, a key addition to the 22,000-acre tapestry of conservation land in Stoddard, NH and adjacent towns protected by private landowners and multiple land conservation organizations. The Murray land in the town of Windsor is permanently protected with a forever wild easement held by the Harris Center for Conservation Education.
$91,922 as part of a multi-year pledge

Northern Connecticut Land Trust, CT – For support of the acquisition and stewardship of the 270-acre Whitaker Woods property, protected with a conservation easement, adding to a tapestry of protected lands in north central Connecticut and southern Massachusetts.

Sierra Club Foundation – For support of the Maine Woods Program, specifically in the Moosehead Lake region.
$10,000

Trust for Public Land – For support of the 6,000-acre Katahdin Lake project, ensuring the protection of 4,000 acres, including the lake, as a forever wild addition to Maine's Baxter State Park, preserving some of the largest areas of old growth forest remaining in the state.

ADDITIONAL GRANTS

The following grants were made from two charitable trusts at the direction of Sweet Water Trust.  These charitable trusts terminated at the end of 2006:

Maine Appalachian Trail Land Trust, ME – For support of an ecological inventory of Maine's High Peaks Region.

Medomak Valley Land Trust, ME – For support of acquisition of the 133-acre Burkett's Mill Extension Tract addition to the Three Brooks Forest, part of a larger 7,000-acre roadless tract in coastal Maine.

Squam Lakes Conservation Society, NH – For an ecological study of the Squam Range, with emphasis on documenting old growth and other ecological attributes.
$5,000

State of Maine – For support of the acquisition by the state of 7,662 acres around the headwaters and lakes of the Machias River and Nicatous Lake, specifically to protect the Machias River headwaters and shore of Fifth and Fourth Lakes with a deed restriction that will protect the river system as wild. This conservation project connects with the Duck Lake Eco Reserve (State of Maine) and the Farm Cove Eco Reserve (Downeast Lakes Land Trust).
